To address the inefficiencies of a lengthy 45-day training program, AT&T’s instructional design team conducted a task analysis and identified that much of the content was irrelevant to job tasks. By focusing only on essential job-related content, they reduced the training time from nine weeks to nine days, cutting training duration by 80%. This revision not only saved time but also resulted in significant financial savings—$37 million over five years, despite an initial development cost of $350,000. This case highlights how instructional design, by prioritizing essential knowledge and skills, can improve both efficiency and cost-effectiveness in learning.
