The Ethical Dilemma Debate
Objective: To explore ethical decision-making in complex situations, identify key issues, and evaluate different perspectives.
Task:
Present, Comment and Discuss: a Peer evaluation session: For this task, you are required to present a 5 minutes update on the progress of your critical essay content. Your classmates will listen and and comment on the areas of further improvement. Likewise you will need to listen and comment. The objective of this process is to exercise on key words identification and to practice on presentation skills. Duration of Process 1 hour depending on the amount of students in class
Instructions:
- Introduction:
- Welcome participants and explain the objective of the activity: to engage in a debate on ethical dilemmas.
- Emphasize the importance of critical thinking, empathy, and considering multiple perspectives.
- Divide participants into small groups of 3-5 members each.
- Ethical Dilemma Selection:
- Provide each group with a list of ethical dilemmas. Examples could include scenarios involving healthcare decisions, environmental concerns, business ethics, social justice issues, etc.
- Instruct each group to choose one ethical dilemma to analyze and debate. Encourage them to select a dilemma that interests them or relates to their field of study/work.
- Analysis and Preparation:
- Give groups time to read and analyze their chosen ethical dilemma.
- Instruct them to identify key issues, stakeholders involved, ethical principles at play, and potential consequences of different courses of action.
- Encourage groups to consider different perspectives and viewpoints on the dilemma.
- Debate:
- Each group presents their chosen ethical dilemma to the rest of the participants.
- One member of the group acts as the facilitator/moderator, while others take on different roles representing various perspectives (e.g., healthcare provider, patient, family member, environmental activist, business owner, etc.).
- Facilitate a structured debate where groups articulate their positions, present arguments, and respond to counterarguments from other groups.
- Encourage respectful dialogue and active listening.
- Reflection and Discussion:
- After the debates, reconvene as a whole group.
- Facilitate a discussion on the different perspectives presented during the debates.
- Encourage participants to reflect on the complexity of ethical decision-making and the challenges of balancing competing interests and values.
- Discuss the importance of considering diverse viewpoints and the potential impact of decisions on various stakeholders.
- Conclusion:
- Summarize the key insights gained from the activity.
- Reinforce the importance of critical thinking, empathy, and ethical reasoning in analyzing complex situations.
- Thank participants for their participation and engagement.
