Activity 1

The Ethical Dilemma Debate

Objective: To explore ethical decision-making in complex situations, identify key issues, and evaluate different perspectives.

Instructions:

  1. Introduction:
    • Welcome participants and explain the objective of the activity: to engage in a debate on ethical dilemmas.
    • Emphasize the importance of critical thinking, empathy, and considering multiple perspectives.
    • Divide participants into small groups of 3-5 members each.
  2. Ethical Dilemma Selection:
    • Provide each group with a list of ethical dilemmas. Examples could include scenarios involving healthcare decisions, environmental concerns, business ethics, social justice issues, etc.
    • Instruct each group to choose one ethical dilemma to analyze and debate. Encourage them to select a dilemma that interests them or relates to their field of study/work.
  3. Analysis and Preparation:
    • Give groups time to read and analyze their chosen ethical dilemma.
    • Instruct them to identify key issues, stakeholders involved, ethical principles at play, and potential consequences of different courses of action.
    • Encourage groups to consider different perspectives and viewpoints on the dilemma.
  4. Debate:
    • Each group presents their chosen ethical dilemma to the rest of the participants.
    • One member of the group acts as the facilitator/moderator, while others take on different roles representing various perspectives (e.g., healthcare provider, patient, family member, environmental activist, business owner, etc.).
    • Facilitate a structured debate where groups articulate their positions, present arguments, and respond to counterarguments from other groups.
    • Encourage respectful dialogue and active listening.
  5. Reflection and Discussion:
    • After the debates, reconvene as a whole group.
    • Facilitate a discussion on the different perspectives presented during the debates.
    • Encourage participants to reflect on the complexity of ethical decision-making and the challenges of balancing competing interests and values.
    • Discuss the importance of considering diverse viewpoints and the potential impact of decisions on various stakeholders.
  6. Conclusion:
    • Summarize the key insights gained from the activity.
    • Reinforce the importance of critical thinking, empathy, and ethical reasoning in analyzing complex situations.
    • Thank participants for their participation and engagement.

This activity provides participants with an opportunity to engage deeply with ethical dilemmas, practice analytical skills, and gain a better understanding of the complexities involved in making ethical decisions.
