Activity 2

Case Study Analysis and Report
Objective:
To enable students to apply theoretical frameworks learned in class to analyze real-world scenarios and develop comprehensive written reports.
Materials Needed:
  • Access to case studies (can be provided by the instructor or sourced online)
  • Theoretical frameworks and concepts covered in the course
  • Writing materials (digital devices)
Instructions:
1.      Introduction
  • Briefly review the key theoretical concepts covered in recent lessons.
  • Discuss how these concepts can be applied to real-world scenarios.
2.      Case Study Selection
  • Provide a selection of case studies relevant to the course material.
  • Allow students to choose a case study individually or in small groups.
3.      Case Study Analysis
  • Instruct students to read their chosen case study thoroughly.
  • Ask them to identify the main issues, stakeholders, and outcomes presented in the case.
4.      Application of Theory
  • Have students select 2-3 theoretical concepts that best apply to their case study.
  • Ask them to analyze the case study using these theories, focusing on:
  • How the theories explain the behaviors and outcomes in the case.
  • What insights the theories provide about the situation.
  • How the application of these theories can lead to a deeper understanding of the case.
5.      Written Report
  • Instruct students to write a detailed report that includes:
  • A summary of the case study.
  • An explanation of the selected theoretical concepts.
  • An analysis of the case using these concepts.
  • Recommendations or conclusions based on their analysis.
6.      Peer Review
  • Have students exchange their reports with a peer for review.
  • Ask them to provide constructive feedback focusing on clarity, application of theory, and overall analysis.
7.      Class Discussion
  • Reconvene as a class and have a few students share their findings and insights.
  • Discuss the different ways theoretical concepts were applied and what was learned from the exercise.
8.      Reflection
  • Have students write a brief reflection on what they learned from the activity.
  • Encourage them to consider how the application of theory to practical situations can enhance their understanding and problem-solving skills.
Assessment:
  • Evaluate the written reports based on clarity, depth of analysis, correct application of theoretical concepts, and the quality of recommendations.
  • Provide feedback on both the content and the application of theory to help students improve their analytical and writing skills.
Example Case Study and Theoretical Application:
Case Study: "The Rise and Fall of Blockbuster"
  • Theoretical Concepts:
  • Disruptive Innovation Theory (Clayton Christensen)
  • Strategic Management Theory (Porter's Five Forces)
  • Change Management (Kotter’s 8-Step Process)
  • Application:
  • Analyze how disruptive innovation led to Blockbuster's decline.
  • Use Porter's Five Forces to examine the competitive environment Blockbuster faced.
  • Apply Kotter’s 8-Step Process to suggest how Blockbuster could have managed change more effectively.
By engaging in this activity, students can develop a more nuanced understanding of theoretical concepts and how they can be utilized to interpret and solve real-world problems.
