The embrace of SHRM by academics and HR professionals can primarily be attributed to the recognition that effective HR practices significantly enhance organizational performance. By aligning HR strategies with business objectives, companies can respond better to competitive pressures, leading to improved employee engagement, retention and productivity.

While there is a strong business case for SHRM, supporting its role as a key driver of success, I also see merit in the argument that self-interest plays a role. HR professionals may advocate for SHRM to elevate their status within organizations and academics may focus on it to align their research with industry needs.

Ultimately, although self-interest may influence the adoption of SHRM, the substantial benefits it brings to organizations highlight its necessity in today’s complex business landscape. SHRM is not just a trend, it’s essential for maximizing human capital and navigating modern challenges.
