As a result of ID intervention, the following have taken place:

  • Reduction in course duration from 45 days to 9 days (an 80% reduction in training time).
  • The cost of developing this new course in the 1960s was $350,000 but resulted in savings of $37 million over a five-year period between 1968 and 1973.
  • A significant improvement in course quality as a result of the improved focus.

When the training was re-designed, the initial approach taken by subject-matter expert or instructor (i.e. to cover all relevant contents which includes whatever that need to been known and nice to be known) was replaced by instructional designer’s approach in which the  instructional designer defined the problem and then determined what knowledge and skills were needed to solve the instructional problem. In short, the instructional designer focused on what the learner "needs to know" and avoided including nonessential content that was "nice to know".
