People management is a process of training, motivating and directing employees to optimize productivity and promote growth in long term.

One of the familiar logistic companies between us during Covid pandemic was DHL. With 100,000 employees in more 200 countries and territories worldwide, DHL has been always focusing to create a healthy talent pipeline since its important for business continuity and provide framework to accelerating opportunity under DHL’s strategy 2025. The company’s marketplace is driven by employee. They use lifecycle approach that maps employee’s journey in terms on how to maintain talent. DHL runs focus and listening groups and based to the data collected, employee wants a flexible career, clear progression and managers act as mentors.

To manage performance in DHL, employee have regular feedback session with line manager so their two-way conversation about performance which will be fed into bespoke employee map outlined their journey, objectives and goals.

DHL’s talent strategy is focused on recruitment process more effective using competency-based recruiting and automation.

DHL also ensured that their regular celebrations, which are typically in person, continued in alternative forms. From virtual As One Appreciation Week celebrations, which saw virtual parties with live DJs and live-streamed yoga classes, to taking DHL’s Got Heart awards ceremonies – where they award their employees substantial donations for causes, they are actively involved in outside of the workplace - digital for the very first time. They recognized that events and celebrations such as these should not be put off, but should instead continue to take place with adjustments.

Feeling valued is a crucial factor in employee satisfaction and retention. With uncertain times still to come, recognition will make a big difference in terms of workforce stability and loyalty. They were able to pay all of their employees a one-off 300-euro bonus, in recognition of their efforts and dedication during these difficult times. DHL want employees to remember that, as an employer, DHL supported them during one of the most difficult periods the world has faced.
