Hot take on People Management

"People are the most important asset of an organisation".

The traditional view on People Management has always been about managing people and providing employees benefits for your business success. I believe People Management should adopt a more modern mindset on improving productivity and motivation within the company. The quality of management and effective management can determine the culture of an organisation, and the productivity of its staff and ultimately the success of the company. One of the key components of People Management is 'Mutual Understanding'. Managers should actively listen and emphatise with their team for a better working relationship and employee retention.

For example, BuzzFeed during the early 2010's were their golden years. This is because their social views (both management and employees) are on equal foot and was resonated by their millennial viewers and customers. Employees were treated well and were given good benefits and good pay. Managers treat their subordinates as equals and interns were given opportunities to showcase their talents. However, the reason to Buzzfeed's downfall (which was very openly explained in interviews and Youtube videos by many of their former employees) is that the company did a poor job of keeping their top talent, which is followed by losing their profit margin and laying off even more top talent.

Buzzfeed had killed off their creativity by enforcinng a clear pattern of preferring quantity over quality. This led to many influencers feeling as if they lacked creative freedom. In 2012, one of its writers was accused of copying and pasting chunks of texts from other articles, then proceeding to hastily cram them into list format. Just a year later, it was reported that other writers were copying their listicles from Reddit posts. Their bigger creators such as The Try Guys, Shane Madej, Steven Lim and Ryan Bergara had escaped their former company to start their own successful Youtube Channels.

Thence, my conclusion is that People Management IS important; but the way we deal with employees, management and our customers/clients as a whole has shifted from the traditional views, i.e. good pay, good employee benefit (which should be 'basic necessities' at this point) to managers assisting their employees to improve one's own personal goals, culture, views, experiences, etc (Social Impact).
