Welcome students! I hope you are ready to explore this exciting module

In this Introduction to Research Methodology topic, it will provide you with a foundation on the principles and practices of research methodology and its application in the design of a research projectBefore we start the lecture, please note that as an open and distance learner (ODL), you should be able to learn independently and optimise the learning modes and environment available to you. Before you begin this module, please ensure that you have the correct module materials, understand the module requirements, and know how the module is conducted.

In this topic, we will examine what research for academic purpose is, the scientific method, the criteria for good research, and what the steps in the research process are.

Completing this topic will enable you to:

  1. Explain the importance of research for academic purposes.

  1. Identify the key concepts, ideas, attributes, approaches and techniques of research.

  1. Difference between primary research and secondary research

Here are the key terms that you should be able to use throughout this lesson:

  • Research

  • The research processes

  • Problem statement

  • Research question

  • Hyphotesis

  • Scientific method

  • Variables

You will spend approximately four (7) hours on this lesson.

Before we start, let’s take a look at the outline of this topic so that you will have a better understanding on the introductory topic.  Today, we are going to discuss the following:
