TOPIC 2: BACKGROUND OF KIWANIS CENTRES IN MALAYSIA
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Compare the objectives based on the mission of at least two Kiwanis Centres run by Kiwanis Clubs in Malaysia;
- Identify the programmes run at Kiwanis Centres;
- Comprehend the roles of at least three Kiwanis Centres with respect to the programmes for the different age groups of children.
- Comprehend the roles of other NGOs relating to special needs children
Compare the objectives based on the mission of at least two Kiwanis Centres run by Kiwanis Clubs in Malaysia;
TOPIC 3: HOW TO ESTABLISH A KIWANIS CENTRE
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Describe a mission statement for a new Kiwanis centre;
- Describe how to set a new Kiwanis centre for children with special education needs
- Describe the roles and responsibilities of office bearers of a Centre Management Committee (CMC) of a Kiwanis centre;
- Describe the roles of government agencies and regulations related to SEN i.e. Social Welfare Department (Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat – JKM) and Ministry of Education (MOE)
- Discuss issues surrounding rules on special needs care centres and form judgements of rules that you will consider when setting up a special needs centre.
TOPIC 4: MANAGING A KIWANIS-OWNED CENTRE
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Describe the functions of the board of a Kiwanis Club in the context of managing a long-term service project, such as a centre, under the club;
- Describe the role and responsibilities of the board members;
- Comprehend the working relationship between the CMC and the club’s board and CMC and the operational staff (administrative and teaching staff).
TOPIC 5 : KNOWING YOUR SPECIAL NEEDS CHILD
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this session, you will be able to
- Identify the main characteristics of different special needs children;
- Explain the key areas of development of children with special needs;
- Describe the learning difficulties for children with special needs;
- Strategise learning intervention for the different types of special educational needs of the children;
TOPIC 6: GUIDELINES ON TRAINING OF SEN TEACHERS
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this topic, you must be able to;- Identify the key components and principles to select qualified teachers for the center
- State the factors that support the quality and the importance of good teachers
- identify the best practices to support children with special needs
- Develop lesson plans according to IEP guidelines to promote the success of each student.
- Identify the benefits of becoming our teacher as part of the professional career of choice.
TOPIC 7 : PLANNING AND MANAGING A BUDGET
Learning Outcomes
Hello and welcome to Topic 6 which will take you through certain important aspects related to managing the funds and finances at a SEN Centre. This is referred to as budgeting.
At the end of this topic, you should be able to:
- Explain what is a budget and budgeting.
- Describe the steps in effectively managing a budget.
- State the main characteristics of an effective budget.
- Create a simple budget for your SEN Centre.
TOPIC 8: EXERCISING GOOD GOVERNANCE IN MANAGING KIWANIS CENTRES
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this topic, you must be able to :
- Describe the meaning of good governance.
- State the reasons of having good governance.
- Identify the subcomponent in the Governance Operating Model (G.O.M)
TOPIC 9: SUSTAINING A KIWANIS CENTRE
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this topic you:
- Must be well informed on the historical formation of Kiwanis Malaysia.
- Able to identify the means to increase enrollment to the programs
- Able to understand and discuss ways of sustaining the centre
- Able to provide and open the opportunity for creative expression and social responsibility every year.
