Why have academics and HR professionals embraced SHRM ? To Alignment with Business Goals, Recognition of HR’s Impact on Performance, Professionalization of HR, Responding to Globalization and Change

The Strong Business Case Argument:

  • Many empirical studies link strategic HR practices with improved firm performance, lower turnover, and better innovation outcomes.

  • Firms that integrate HR with business strategy tend to adapt faster to market changes.

  • SHRM helps organizations attract and retain talent, essential in competitive industries.

The Self-Interest Argument:

  • Critics argue that some academics promote SHRM because it creates more research opportunities and academic prestige.

  • HR professionals might embrace SHRM because it increases their power, budget, and influence within organizations.

  • There’s a risk SHRM becomes more about rhetoric than practical impact if companies adopt it superficially.

In my opinion, SHRM is not just self-interest; it’s a legitimate evolution of HR towards greater strategic value—but like any management approach, its success depends on authentic adoption and execution.

Great points! I agree that SHRM adds real strategic value when done right. While some self-interest may exist, the positive impact on performance and adaptability makes a strong case for its importance in modern organizations.
