Human resources department was usually focused on recruitment and staff training. Looking forward, organizations are giving their HR leaders a chance to implement a more proactive approach.

It allows the HR department is build a link between an organization's most valuable assets, it's people and the strategic direction of the company.

Is there a strong business case for the strategic approach to HRM, or is it more the case that academics and HR professionals have embraced SHRM out of self-interest?

Ultimately, things will always be about self interest, the needs of the individual, the needs of the company, how much they could provide and the development and growth of that. With the benefits of increased productivity, enhanced customer loyalty etc.. the more lucrative approach would be shrm

I think what we define as "self-interest" needs to be explicit. It can be easy to say everything is of self interest however self-interest as I understand it usually comes at the detriment of the larger collective. I would not consider the academic and HR interest as self-interest but rather as a means of define new literature that can be used to deliver better results in HR teams.
